ABOUT RICHARD BURNS
Richard Burns is a UK artist working from his studio in Dorset.
Richard's great uncle was the New Zealand sculptor, John Middleditch and his great aunt was the Venetian mosaic artist Mary Napier. Richard's grandmother Virginia Mills, and his mother Imelda Burns, were also accomplished oil painters. These early family influences had a lasting impact on Richard's journey as an artist. Except for his time at the National Art School in Sydney, Australia, Richard is largely self-taught.
Richard is influenced by the beauty of the natural world and our relationship with it. He paints from memory and from a focused observation of life, using colour and form to create an intuitive and emotional response to the world around him and the human experience.
He often works in the early hours of the morning when the world is quiet and the light is diffused, exploring dreams, obsession and desire, mysticism and mortality.
Richard collects and arranges special objects, both contemporary and ancient, together with motifs and imagery from sketchbooks and travel photos, memories and experiences, deploying colour, form and expressive brush-strokes to create nature-scapes, portraits and still-life.
His works are held in private collections, in the UK and internationally and he has exhibited in both group and solo shows.
